Having Flatulence Troubles? Here is a solution!

Flatulence, known as Aadhaman in Ayurveda, is a medical term for releasing gas from the digestive system through the anus. It is caused due to an imbalance of Vata and Pitta Dosha and occurs when gas collects inside the digestive system, and is a normal process. It is very common. We all accumulate gas in our digestive system. Most people pass gas about 10 times a day. If you pass wind more frequently than this on a regular basis, you could have excessive flatulence, which has a number of causes.

Some Causes of Flatulence

  • Swallowing excessive air during chewing gum, smoking, eating quickly, etc.
  • Consuming foods that increase air like beans, cabbage, broccoli, raisins, lentils, and prunes

Hazards of Flatulence

Some conditions caused by excessive flatulence are:

  • constipation
  • gastroenteritis
  • food intolerances, such as lactose intolerance
  • irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Crohn’s disease
  • celiac disease
  • diabetes
  • eating disorders
  • ulcerative colitis
  • dumping syndrome
  • gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • autoimmune pancreatitis
  • peptic ulcers

Some Ayurvedic remedies to Treat Flatulence

Ayurvedic medicine for bloating and gas can prove to be very effective and useful as it provides the patient with gastric relief. Ayurvedic medicine for gastric problem leaves little or no side effects saving you from the discomfort. The Ayurvedic remedy for gastric is made from natural ingredients


Ginger juice or warm ginger water is useful in relieving flatulence.

2. Herbal Concoction

Jeera and fennel are some of the herbs that are often used to ease bloating and reduce intestinal gas. Here is the recipe for the concoction:

  1. Toast 1 tsp fennel seeds and mix in 1 cup of boiled water.
  2. Add a few pieces of fresh ginger, a pinch of hing (asafetida), and dash of rock salt to the boiled water.
  3. Sip this slowly after your meal.

3. Triphala

If one is having constipation, pain and excessive flatulence then one can take triphala powder at bed time

4. Warm Water Concoction

Glass of Warm water with half spoon of Ghee and a pinch of Asafoetida (Hing) at bed time.

5. Ajwain

Ajwain is a great digestive. It secrets gastric juices aiding digestion, prevents and cures flatulence.

6. Lemon

Lemon juice enhances digestion. It is effective in curing colic flatulence and constipation.

7. Buttermilk

Buttermilk enhances digestive fire. It promotes digestion and prevents flatulence.

8. Ayurvedic Medicines

Some of the Ayurvedic medicines like Hingwastakachurna, Hinguvachadi churna, Ajamodha churna, Avipattikara churna can be administered.

9. Some Ayurvedic Treatments

Ayurvedic treatments like Nitya virechana, Basti in the form of Dashamoola Niruhavasti can be advocated.

10. Practice wind releasing pose.

As its name implies, pawanmuktasana, or wind releasing pose, helps to push out trapped air.

How to practice:

  1. Lie on your back.
  2. Hug your right knee into your chest.
  3. Inhale deeply, then exhale and reach your knee toward your nose.
  4. Hold this position for a few seconds, then inhale and release.
  5. Order is very important here– do the exercise 3 times on the right side first, and then 3 times on the left. This follows the natural movement of the colon so that you’re literally pushing gas out.
  6. Lastly, hug both knees into the chest and hold for a few seconds. Repeat 3 times.

Some Do’s and Don’ts

  • Avoid foods such as beans, broccoli, cabbage, asparagus, coffee, eggs, fish,radishes, dates, figs or artificial sweeteners – which can promote gas production.
  • Limit high fat foods. Fats slow the digestion of foods through the stomach and small intestine.
  • Avoid milk and milk products, especially if you suspect you are lactose intolerant.(Use buttermilk as alternative)
  • Try taking a digestive enzyme or digestive powders before meals to help improve carbohydrate digestion.

If you have unexplained flatulence, or if you experience the following symptoms along with flatulence, you should see your doctor:

  • swollen abdomen
  • abdominal pain
  • gas that’s persistent and severe
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • unintentional weight loss
  • heartburn
  • blood in stool
